Cory Hardrict is one of the busiest professionals in film and television. He sat down with DOPE Magazine editor ToneSwep to discuss how, for him, Family, Life, and Career are all lanes on the same Hollywood highway.

Here is an Excerpt from the Full Length Interview

(TS) Yo, I peeped the “South LA: Angel City” trailer and was blown away, a real crime drama. What inspired you to produce that project?

(CH) One day I was just at home, and I was like – ‘LA needs something’. And me being from inner-city Chicago, I had an idea of what that something was - gritty, harder; realer. My partner Mo McRae is from South Central. I called him and told him about the idea and we wrote a script; banged out a treatment, did some research on the inner-city, and shot the pilot gorilla style. We recently held a screening for the pilot. We’re in talks with networks to pick it up. It has the element of The Wire, mixed with The Shield. And I won’t give too much away here, but my character and Mo’s character are very smart and educated. It’s more of a white collar situation. Credit fraud, identity theft, different scams, which is a world that hasn’t been explored fully.

(TS) Every professional has their advantage. As an actor, what’s yours?

(CH) My main advantage is my life; where I come from. I use it in my work. I gravitate towards dramatic stories and those roles. I came out here (to Hollywood) at 22-years-old with $75 in my pocket. Then I lost my mother. Then I lost my brother, he was murdered. I pull from it. It’s there and I use it. I’m not afraid to go and use that pain. It’s easy for me to tap into that because its honesty. Life imitates art.

(TS) How has married life changed you?

(CH) Married life… you gotta come home at night (Laughs). Naw, but It’s great. I married my best friend and my partner. I was a laid back guy anyway. I was meant to share this time here in my life with a soulmate. It changed me for the better.

(TS) How has fatherhood matured you?

(CH) Wow! I don’t even know if I’ve eaten today. But I know he’s eaten two or three times already. Building him (his Son) to be the best person he can possibly be, so he can head out into this world and accomplish things; be an asset to society.
