BROOKE VALENTINE – The DOPE MAG Interview
November 01, 2012 1 commentsSinger, Songwriter, Mother & Matriarch - Brooke Valentine is a busy girl. DOPE Magazine caught up with the lady rocking furs and pumps on the set of her “Don’t Wanna Be in Love” Video Shoot for a little girl-power pow wow with writer Bridgette Dowdell.
Here is an Excerpt from the Full Length Interview
(Bridgette Dowdell: BD) Your music is known to be very Hip Hop with a “B” girl style, complimented with a beautiful R&B voice. How has your persona changed or evolved?
(Brooke Valentine: BV) Well first of all, thank you! Change and maturity, I’ve learned a lot more since Chain Letter and the work I’ve done along the way has evolved me as a person and artist. I’m a different Brooke. Chain Letter was random hip-hop and “B-girl” and that style is still there, however it has evolved because I have. I’m just being me, it’s not something I strive to do, I would say, it’s still the same Brooke. It’s just an evolved me. People may say my sound has changed, but I feel my new project is the same Brooke because Chain Letter was very honest. I had to keep it there, I have to be honest. I’m not a good liar (giggles). I’ve never been. I have to stick with honesty.
(BD) What do you believe is your purpose in music and life?
(BV) What I expect people to gain from my music is to be moved through my emotions. I believe in making music where people can smile, be happy and be inspired through my music. I like my listeners to be able to feel me through my music. My purpose in life is to be truthful to myself and others. Spreading and learning as much as I can to help people along the way with my experiences. If someone is going through something or having a bad day, I try to change or influence their life in some positive way before I go to bed.
(BD) When did you arrive at this point of self-identification and direction?
(BV) I truly have to give credit to what I call my “life break”, my vacation from the industry. And I want to be clear about one thing, when I took my break, I never left or abandoned my music or love for it. I don’t regret my break at all, but the break is what I needed in order to get to the place where I am now.
