Edgy, Talented, drop-dead Gorgeous and lifeline Serious, MS. WILLIAMS is the hottest unsigned artist in American music. With offers piling up and phone calls filing in, we linked up with the amazingly talented electro-Pop singer/songwriter in Hollywood to holla at homegirl ‘bout all her hype.

The fire-eyed model-chick chilled with editor ToneSwep as they talked about Life, Loss, Love, Labels, and Lame ass pickup lines between Looks at her exclusive DOPE MAG cover shoot.

Here is an Excerpt from the Full Length Interview

(TONE SWEP: TS) This time last year, you were signed to Virgin Records and recording your debut album. Easily one of the most anticipated new arrivals in the electro pop genre. What changed?

(MS. WILLIAMS: MS) Everything! Everything changed. Last year about this time it was more about growth. About finding out who I was, what my exact, perfect sound was. Virgin was my first major label deal. My first deal, so everything was new. Now I know who I am musically, and what I want to do. I’m surrounded by a whole new team, a better team with a shared vision for my career.

(TS) Your sound is pop, dance, but deeper, a shade darker, and at times brokenhearted. How do those mood swinging attitudes coexist in one artist? And how do they become your music?

(MS) … (Patiently)… just experiencing life really. I was sitting down talking to someone at Motown yesterday, and they asked me ‘What is the message in your music?’ And I said I’m going through a crazy, colorful journey called life! So there isn’t one set message, but there are many messages. And sometimes many messages within the message, because I’m trying to translate my real life into real music. My music is my healer. Maybe it can be that for someone else.

(TS) You grew up in San Jose, a place of extreme tech-boom wealth neighbored by the abject poverty of a third world country in the East Bay. Where did your upbringing fit into all of this?

(MS) I would say I was in the middle of all of that. I was raised by my hero, my mom. Who is from Watts. She was born and raised in the hood. She is the oldest of six children. And I was also raised by the streets, and I remain in the middle of that. I have been around everything in the Bay. And you see so much in the Bay. Too much.

(TS) Why no mainstream rappers from the Bay? Philthy Rich, Clyde Carson, Beeda Weeda and others are all big in the Bay but still underground on the grand scene.

(MS) I think there is a time for everything when it comes to mainstream. It’s like a one at a time thing. Atlanta had its time. New York and LA had their times where their sound was the sound. In the Bay, we do have a very different and unique sound that few people understand. Unless you were raised in that culture of the Bay, and around Bay music, you won’t feel it or understand it. The Bay’s time will come. The tracks in the Bay are very different also. But I think the Bay artists just make music. We just make music. We’re not worried about chasing Hollywood and chasing that next hit. We stay more true to ourselves and to the music, and I think most Bay artists make music for people who live in the Bay.

(TS) What’s up with you and SpongeBob?

(MS) (Laughs uproariously!) Oh, My God!…. how did I know that was going to come up! It’s a crazy mental stage he puts me in. A frame of mind. SpongeBob brings me back to my childhood, my last stage of innocence. When everything was so beautiful in the world. I was obsessed with SpongeBob as a child. It reminds me of a simpler time. A good happy time and place. I have probably owned every design of SpongeBob pants ever made. I have all the shirts and accessories too.

(TS) You are too old to be drinking up these little kids’ Capri Suns, too. I see your Capri Sun addiction has gotten out of hand.

(MS) (Laughs!) You know what; I can’t even drink just one. And with my grown ass I drink the whole box. I can’t drink one or two like a normal person. I bring cases to the studio and everybody drinks them with me.

(TS) Ok, wait. How you gone spread your Capri Sun addiction to others? That ain’t even cool.

    (MS) (Laughs!) What’s your drink?

(TS) Coffee homie. If I don’t have my coffee, it’s a wrap. I think I’d be in jail if it weren’t for coffee.

So “music is your healer” well YOUR music is my healer…on SO many colorful and emotional levels! In the sweet words of my hero Tupac, “Picture me rollin” all over NorCal & SoCal bumpin your music and having so many people from so many different ages, races and walks of life, asking me “who is that” and saying “damn, she is dope”! Then I yell back “Ms. Williams and stay tuned because you are about to get hit with the most incredible, musical genius, songwriter and performer you have experienced in a very long time!

Hearing alot of hype from producer friends including bits and pieces of her wild production company ride and mistreatment. Can’t wait for the read.

been a fan since myspace days. so great to see her progression! i was wondering what happened with her record deal. glad to finally know it wasn’t her or the label. im curious to know more specifics about the production company though and if it’s anyone known? it’s sad that some things get lost at the hands of others. we’re rooting for you ms. williams!
