Cool Company - Beyond Genre

When Cool Company co-founders Fat Matt and Cool Yan formed their Brooklyn-based Pop Hop duo in 2012, what began as a casual collaboration between two musicians quickly became a certified sound team. Comprised of writer/vocalist Yannick Hughes and writer/producer Matt Fishman, Cool Company released their debut EP in the summer of 2013. Spearheaded by singles like “Do It Now” and “Oh No”, the eponymous debut showcased CC’s ability to fuse genres ranging from R&B and neo soul to Hip Hop, house and alternative.

Realizing their finished product was as raw as it was real, Matt and Yan returned to the lab and conducted a master class of sorts: They taught themselves to be better, and better they got. The result was more musical focus, including greater coordination within their compositional structure and better fluidity. This is perhaps best exemplified with “Call You Back”, a primarily electro-pop EP that teased the charts and kept radio DJ’s manning the request lines quite busy. Cool Company’s net move, the “Summer Daze EP”, dropped last year and further solidified the crew as music scene mainstays. Fat Matt’s remix of “Howling”, one of the EP’s most popular tracks, is the first official twist on the original version, adding to their growing catalogue of performance material. Expect this summer’s festival sets to be in Cool Company while major labels and established indies remain in hot pursuit of the unsigned musicians. In the meantime they will continue to release music that’s beyond genre.
