Born Gavriel Rafael Aminov in New York City, the origin of the Puerto Rican-Russian artist’s stage name is significant: “I have a scar down the center of my head. They said it looked like a vein,” he recalls, reflecting on the nickname given him by his high school classmates. “I kind of liked that and thought it was pretty funny, so it stuck.” Vein began taking piano lessons at the precocious age of five.
