“Because I never, ever / Felt like this, I / Do believe that you’re worth the risk,” is how new neo-soul expressive Charity emotes her truest feelings on “Yellow”, the fastest sprinting single on the Motor City creative’s debut EP of the same name, which drops September 18th. Drawing same-lane comparisons to Corrine Bailey Rae and Lianne La Havas, the gifted songwriter with the vaporous voice and charming tresses presents an ethereal experience with the five tune EP. One might suggest her studio musicals are socio-emotional in origin while interpersonally originative in stage-like presentation. We haven’t heard Charity before, and that’s refreshing at a time (when) and in a place (where) even boom-bap and backpack appears to have been there, done that.

“You are terrifying, and strange, and beautiful,” pens the poetic pretty person on a recent Instagram post. Much like her music, the artist’s image is aligned with her emotions and synchronized with her thoughts. With one strong word exercising each offering, the “Yellow” EP makes a straight-laced statement when static-faced confusion is the accepted social convention. Many making music today aren’t living the art they’re arranging – their existence essentially carbon-based evidence of their art imitating our lives. This is not the case with Charity, a sincere sister act whose celestial approach to speaking words over production trombones into headsets while refusing to let heads rest.
After high school, the adventurous singer left Motown for the country music capital of Nashville. Having studied classical music and jazz guitar at Tennessee State University, the empowered young woman currently educates primary school-aged children while neo-soul music pursues her. And yes, that’s written correctly: As neo-soul music pursues Her, because unique visions engaged with enchanting voices are a rare book to take on a date let alone marry into the industry. However, focused fans and free-spirited followers who flock toward feel good flows will find Charity then fully engage her daisy-flower-hued EP.
The inspired artist with a pretty penchant for honest articulation collects beautiful moments in an undescribable way – then paints them yellow like the sun, not sorrow.
