Frank Peters was named an MTV Artist to Watch with good reason. The South Carolina-native has shared the stage with such Hip Hop luminaries as Juicy J and Lil Kim, headlined London’s Urban Exposure concert series, and was named VH1’s Artist on the Rise. After flooding the southeast with singles, mixtapes, freestyles, and live shows, Frank released his latest mixtape “Fifty Shades of Frank” earlier this year. A 21 song effort ranging from the reflective “Mercy” and “Cocaine Heart” to the boastful “Ambitionz”, the project illustrates the artist has more than one mindset when it comes to making music. Frank is at his best, however, when extending a head nod to the hoe$ or a handshake to the hustlers. On “Half Dollar”, Frank raps: “Not the ball player / but I got plays that I’m runnin’… Ciroc on the flight / got the flight feeling cozy / First class, don’t coach me.”

The Carolina’s haven’t donated a standout rap-writer to Hip Hop since J. Cole over five years ago. At least, not until now. Frank is a mix of Little Brother’s real life and Petey Pablo’s party animal. He clearly makes a conscious decision to add wordplay to his songs in an effort to tell each tale more colorfully. Over solid production, the artist delivers a crossover house music song with “Get it Right”. Reminiscent of a Flo-Rida hit, Frank influences the free spirits to dance while letting their minds drift. You can imagine during a live show he would follow with “Bang”, where he revisits the lyrics and street lore sufficient to shake the crowd awake after rocking them into a dream state.
In all “Fifty Shades of Frank” is a solid first quarter performance offering rap listeners and club regulars a few audio visual highlights. Frank’s follow up effort will undoubtedly prove that a game changer has stepped on to Hip Hop’s high court.
