Simone Battle was so butterfly boss. Pretty, talented, and creative with her freedom influenced fashion ensembles. Simone seldom looked the same in any two pictures. From her hair to her wears she dared to discover variety. Fierce fly girl fashionista aside, Simone showed even greater promise as an actress and recording artist. Kick ass dancer with a sassy edge, pop provocative in song with an inner innocence, and a hint of rowdy rebelliousness as seen in the G.R.L. single “Vacation”. Simone was an emerging musical style maven made for the screen.

Her untimely death has intoxicated our spirits with sadness here at Pure DOPE. We’d really and truly hoped to have Simone gorgeously command the cover of a future edition of the publication one day soon. At 25, Simone owned a certain sexy; offered a refreshingly sensible pretty appeal, had a firm grasp on the art of beautiful miss-behavior. And judging from her fun personality – and given the fact she was a June Gemini, like me – I venture to presume our interview would have been nothing short of colorfully insightful. Deep thought, real talk, seasoned with a few shock value jewels, industry gems, and girl power punch lines to keep it all the way G.
Beyond that, I cannot begin to imagine how stylish Simone’s cover shoot would have been. She was fearless when it came to her flyness. And every magazine photo shoot represents its own uniquely individualized performance. A film in still frames suspended in time for next eras to re-experience: Our past in their future. Simone would have rocked our glammed out pages like a stage. She was good like that. “She taught me, by example, that it’s okay to take risks with fashion,” writes Danielle Nisimov, a Webb Tower roommate of Simone’s while University of Southern California students. “I admired her for taking chances and expressing her creativity in every aspect of her being.”
I imagine Simone’s dreamy style schemes stirred in an artsy bartender’s blend with our Fairfax street meets muscle beach heat meets Bev Hills boutique aura would have been pure cinema: The sweetest Cali Girl taboo. Pow! Wow! man…. Simone Battle is greatly missed. Greatly appreciated. A treasured young talent and valued friend of many gone far too soon. We miss her. We missed out, on knowing her. Our deepest condolences and sincerest prayers to Simone’s spirit, the Battle family, and her dearest and closest confidants. Rest, Princess - you were indeed a DOPE ROSE.
