Nyemiah Supreme is cotton candy on a rainy day, an exciting rollercoaster ride in rap’s otherwise predictable amusement park where female rappers are waiting in long lines to be “the next” knockoff of whomever they were signed to copy. Timbaland’s new muse is urban media’s newest musician, but the golden child from Queens – whose daringly catchy hooks, audacious dance ensembles, and somehow innocent-slash-magnificent approach to ghetto girl chic – has caught the God’s of the game off guard. Nyemiah is a refreshing blessing to the business.
I haven’t met Nyemiah before; never seen her. I told her this. Not so much in the vein of never meeting her in person, as in the sense of never experiencing her in persona – never met an artist quite like her. She’s different without being distant. An original when authentic is nearly non-existent. What began as acting classes and ballet dancing in second grade became the rapper/dancer/choreographer she matured into, gaining acceptance into the storied Dance Theatre of Harlem and, soon-after, popular Hip Hop dance collective Queens’ Finest as their youngest member. $upreme’s grind has been on the minds of many for some time.
The slanted-eyed miss with the larger-than-life smile, honey complexion and hourglass figure has already toured with Chris Brown, Sneaker Pimps, and Jim Jones; worked with Juelz Santana and now Timbaland, who signed the starlet earlier this year – Nyemiah is easily one of the more multi-talented performers the game has seen in recent years. She kicked it with DOPE at her exclusive cover shoot to discuss her new single “Rock-N-Roll”, growing up in Queens, using her unique dancing style to add show to tell, and why she is inspired by Native American culture.

(Tone Swep: TS) I haven’t seen you before. I mean that in a good way, as in - You don’t remind me of anyone. Don’t sound like, nor look like, anyone. How did you manage to arrive in an industry addicted to formulaic approaches to discover “The Next” instead of “The First”? You are coming in as an original.
(Nyemiah Supreme: Supreme) I never wanted to be a copy cat. Never wanted to be another “Her” or another one of “Them”. Or do what anyone else does, look like anyone else does. I thrive on being me. Nyemiah Supreme is about being original. How I dress, my music, my thinking. I didn’t want to be the next Lil’ Kim. How I am now is how I have always been, so keeping true to myself and sticking to my script is important to me.
(TS) Nas was Half Man, Half Amazing. You’re Half Ratchet, Half Activist. What’s going on with the Queens emcees? Everyone is half this and half that?
(Supreme) (Laughs!) I know, right. It’s probably one of my multiple personalities. Half Ratchet is my half crazy side, cursing it up on a track. Being cocky, aggressive. The half Activist side is doing it for the ladies. Addressing us and what we go through from a positive, empowering angle. I try to give both. Not just all aggressive. Relate to different people in the audience, different listeners at different points in their lives.
(TS) What about this line of yours: “Women are coming back / Used to be in the Back / Now we’re whippin’ the ‘Lacs.”
(Supreme) Music-wise, I feel like the old cliques that had females in them put those females in the background. The females were never the sellers, always the side piece, the mistress. Nicki Minaj changed that. She gets the most attention in the YM crew. For girls like myself wanting to be in the front, the opportunity is there. The lane is open. People want to see us now. People are checking for the next femcee, or next hot female artist in rap. And then Nyemiah Supreme is all about independence, getting it yourself.
(TS) What do you feel Hip Hop needs from you? What do you know rap wants from you? Can those divergent wants and needs coexist?
(Supreme) I think that Hip Hop wants a message, some type of substance. So I’m not just rapping about what heels I wear, or saying I’m the flyest all the time. Rap just wants some cockiness, sex appeal, but to co-exist… I like to talk about love and relationships. I have been working on meshing them together more. On my new single (coming soon) I give a bit of both. Merging the two together is an important part of my music.
(TS) What is a goal digger?
(Supreme) A girl who is after hers. A woman who is chasing what she wants. Doesn’t have her hand out waiting for a man, or anyone for that matter, to make it happen for her.
(TS) So basically Neyo’s Miss Independent on some street sh!t.
(Supreme) (Laughs!) Yes! Yes! That’s it. I’m saying that on a record (Laughs!)
