DOPE Catches Up With Rapper / Dancer JORDAN NEWT
Read the Full Length Interview
(ToneSwep: TS) I see your mother had a birthday yesterday. Happy Birthday MOM! What gift did you surprise her with?
(Jordan Newt: Jordan) Roses! She’s out of town right now, and right now I’m coming from a show at a high school in Pomona. So next week I’m going to take her to dinner also. For a gift, I don’t know. My mom only likes certain things. So we will have to get together and figure it out (Laughs).
(TS) How does it feel to be 15 and in the industry?
(Jordan) It’s fun! Kinda cool seeing all these things for myself. I watched so many artists when I was growing up, because both my father (Bob Newt) and uncle (J. Valentine) are producers. So I witnessed their experiences, but now I’m experiencing things for myself. It’s cool… downside… I still want to hang out with my friends. My manager and my Dad make sure that I’m focused but still have time for fun. I get to be 15 outside of the industry. Sometimes there’s a party I can’t go to because it conflicts with my recording schedule, or I have a show, or an interview, but usually there is a way to squeeze everything in.
(TS) You hit the music scene earlier this year with “Fresh Down 2 My Socks” and later ‘iPhone”, two singles that did well virally. But what were you doing prior to this year, before you hit the music game?
(Jordan) I got started at the end of eighth grade. It was more a hobby. Just fun. But doing music professionally has always been a part of my family. My dad and uncle were always in the industry, so I got to hang out with artists and industry reps; it prepared me a lot. They were in the music business. They helped me with the little things, what to watch out for and expect so I know what’s coming. How to handle certain situations.
(TS) When you and the team dropped “iPhone” this summer did you anticipate that it would garner the response it did?
(Jordan) I knew it would be fun. I was excited about it. When the video was on the 106 & Park countdown, it seemed real. Like, wow this is a real fun song for fun people who like to be fun (Laughs).
(TS) What cities did you hit on your showcase tour? What was the response?
(Jordan) I’ve done a couple shows in the Bay Area. The rest of my shows are here in LA. Like today I had a show in Pomona at a high school.
(TS) Any crazy stalker stories so far? Do you have a Stan?
(Jordan) Not yet (Laughs). But on Facebook girls will find ways to get my number and call me and giggle and hang up. So, a lot of prank calls from girls.
(TS) Why was music only a hobby for you at first?
(Jordan) Honestly, the main thing is… music was just something I wanted to try. I loved dancing, and rapping, and performing. But I wasn’t sure if it was a job or career. And I was doing well in school. So you think about going maybe to college. But I wanted to try it, and my parents support me in everything I do. And I’m happy it’s working out so far.
(TS) You are from the Bay Area, San Francisco. Now you’re living in LA. People who aren’t from Cali don’t realize how different Nor Cal is from So Cal. What would you say are the major differences between the Bay and LA?
(Jordan) Like, people in LA are nice. But I feel like people in the Bay Area are nicer. LA is faster. The fast life is here in LA. And in LA, at any given moment, you might bump into a really big opportunity. In the Bay I would say you have to make it. Make the opportunity.
(TS) Talk a little about the television and film projects you have on the horizon?
(Jordan) We’re actually going to start filming a pilot for a reality show around me and my family. And then we are in talks with networks for my own show. Some of the ideas we got at first were really dumb, so we didn’t go with them. But now other ideas are coming in. So we will have something solid soon.
(TS) What’s next?
(Jordan) My third single should be coming out by January. And then look for my album. I have all the songs for the album now. We are just putting out singles, videos, and I’m doing shows. And a lot on Facebook and Twitter to build up.
(TS) What advice do you have for a young fan of yours, say around eight or nine-years-old, who wants to follow in your footsteps?
(Jordan) I’d give advice like, you always need to work hard. Being great is possible. He can do it. But you have to go out there and do it. Don’t let other people who don’t like what you’re doing make you not like what you’re doing. And just to have fun in life. Have fun with his friends and keep a good attitude.
