(ToneSwep: TS) I know that your favorite city is Barcelona, Spain. But what is your favorite color? Why?
(Indigo Charlie: INDIGO) My favorite color is green, especially mint green. If you walk into my house, I have a mint green bedroom and an olive green kitchen. Don’t worry, the rest of the house is a beautiful cream and filled with art (laughs). I am obsessed with the color in general. I think the interpretation of green and what it gives off to the world is amazing. Green is versatile unlike some of the other colors, but even though I love green that much I don’t wear it. I am totally not running around like a leprechaun around Los Angeles.
(TS) Music critics are creative, but not always the most accurate. Your style is coined as “Indie Pop” or “Indie Alternative”. Is that right? Is that wrong? Define your style sis?
(INDIGO) Indie-Alternative would definitely be the correct description for my musical style. Those light sounds of the tambourine, beauty of the xylophone, and the airy undertone of my voice leaves me in an Indie pocket.
(TS) The color of your music is inspired by Swedish singer Lykke Li and London indie-pop band The Xx among others. What about those two sounds appeals to you?
(INDIGO) The softness to Lykke Li’s voice is a breath of fresh air to me. I feel like she embodies femininity in her music in the sexiest way without trying. I’ve literally listened to her album every single day for the last three years. She is brilliant. I was lucky enough to see her perform, literally a foot away from me, at a dinner party thrown by Max Azria and his beautiful wife at their home. From that moment, I loved Lykke forever. As for The XX, I die for every breath Jamie XX puts into a record. I think he is brilliant, along with the fact that he and Romie XX complement each other like peanut butter and jelly.
(TS) You are a beautiful young woman. Spinning curls, wavy lashes, curved where curves are supposed to be. How long have you known of your beauty?
(INDIGO) Thank you so much that is so sweet. I’ve reached a place in my life where I am extremely comfortable when I look in the mirror. We all have little imperfections, but you either fix them or embrace them. I’ve gone through several weaves, bad highlights, and questionable fashion choices. When it comes to style I believe that you have to have some fashion don’ts before you have your fashion do’s that create your signature style. As for how long I’ve known of my beauty I’m not sure if that has a time frame. I think I’ve just become more and more comfortable and built my confidence even more. It comes more from inside than what I see outside, I love who I am as a person. I’m a kind, genuine, loyal person who tried to treat people the way I want to be treated, and I think that is beautiful.
(TS) Like so many of us Cali folks, you appear to be an ethnic hybrid. What is the diversity of your ethnic background?
(INDIGO) I am white chocolate and dark chocolate with the smallest caramel twist. My mother is Sweedish, German, Dutch, and Native American. My father is African American. They both have given me a beautiful blend and I’m so appreciative.
(TS) Seems as though every young person covets the limelight, but few are as prepared as you internally. What is your psycho-emotional approach to stardom?
(INDIGO) I’m not trying to be a star. Fame comes with the territory, but it’s not what I am seeking out. For me it’s all about expression and connecting with people I may not meet otherwise. If you come into this game looking for fame it will eat you alive. It’s easy to get caught up in the external love you are receiving for that minute. The people who survive in this game are the ones who are doing it for them. They are grounded with friends and family, a close small circle that would make you happy no matter what you were doing.
